Frequently asked questions

Will my animated WebP stay animated?

Yes in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, which can read an animated WebP frame by frame. Other browsers only expose the first frame, so you’d get a still GIF. If that happens, open this page in one of those three browsers and convert again.

Where do animated WebP files come from?

Chat stickers from WhatsApp and Telegram, animations saved from websites, and many GIF sites, which now serve WebP because it’s lighter. When you download one of these, you often end up with a .webp instead of a .gif.

Why is the GIF bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses animation far more efficiently than GIF, a format from 1987. The same animation is often several times larger as a GIF. If size matters, keep the WebP for places that accept it.

Why do the colours look slightly different?

A GIF frame can hold at most 256 colours, while WebP has no such limit. Cartoon stickers usually look the same; photo-like animations can show fine dot patterns or banding.

What about stickers with a transparent background?

GIF transparency is all or nothing: each pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid. Soft, feathered sticker edges become hard edges, which can show a thin rim on dark chat backgrounds.

Can I convert a still WebP image?

Yes, it becomes a still GIF. For ordinary pictures, though, WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG keep more colour and are usually the better choice.
