Video to GIF in 3 steps

  1. Choose a video your browser can play, such as MP4, WebM or MOV.
  2. Set the start and end (up to 20 seconds), the frames per second and the width.
  3. Press "Convert to GIF" and download your looping clip.

Why ConvertKoala?

  • Grab the exact moment

Set where the GIF starts and ends, so you get the reaction, the goal or the punchline and nothing else.

  • No upload queue

Videos are big. Instead of pushing hundreds of megabytes to a server, frames are read straight from the file on your device.

  • Size under control

Pick 5, 10 or 15 frames per second and a width of 320, 480 or 640 px to balance smoothness against file size.

  • Private clips stay private

Family videos and screen recordings never leave your browser. No account, no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an MP4 to a GIF?

Add the MP4, set the start and end of the part you want, choose the frame rate and width, then press "Convert to GIF". WebM and MOV files work the same way, as long as your browser can play them.

Why is a GIF limited to 20 seconds?

GIF stores every frame as a full picture, with none of the clever compression a video uses. Twenty seconds at 10 frames per second is already 200 pictures, so longer clips would make files too heavy to share. If you pick a longer range, it is cut at 20 seconds.

How do I keep the GIF small?

Shorten the clip first, then lower the frame rate (5 or 10 fps) and the width (320 or 480 px). Each of these cuts the file size a lot. Fast action looks smoothest at 15 fps, but that costs the most.

My iPhone .mov video won’t load. Why?

iPhones often record in HEVC (H.265), which some browsers on Windows and Android can’t play. Try opening this page in Safari, or set the camera to "Most Compatible" so new videos are saved as H.264, which plays everywhere.

What happens to HD or 4K videos?

They work, but each frame is scaled down to the width you choose (at most 640 px). A GIF wider than that would grow huge for little gain on most screens.

Will the GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format can’t hold audio, so the result is silent. That is also why GIFs autoplay happily in chats and on web pages.
