GIF to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Pick the GIFs: old web graphics, clip art or an animation you want a still of.
  2. Press "Convert to PNG"; the first frame of each GIF is captured.
  3. Download the PNG, or one ZIP for a batch.

Why ConvertKoala?

  • Break out of 256 colours

In PNG you can paint, add gradients and soft shadows without everything snapping back to a tiny palette.

  • Clip art stays transparent

Old website buttons, smileys and clip art with see-through backgrounds keep them in the PNG.

  • A still from an animation

Need a thumbnail or preview image of a GIF? The first frame comes out as a clean, static PNG.

  • Converted on your device

Your GIFs are opened by the browser itself. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is saved, because a PNG holds a single still image. If the frame you want is later in the animation, this page can’t pick it; take a screenshot at the right moment instead.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

It will look exactly the same. PNG is lossless, so it copies the GIF’s pixels faithfully, but it can’t restore colours the GIF already threw away. The gain is room to edit afterwards.

Is the transparent background kept?

Yes. Pixels that are transparent in the GIF stay transparent in the PNG, so stickers and clip art keep their shape on any background.

Why convert GIF to PNG at all?

Many design tools, presentation apps and print services handle PNG better than GIF, and some profile-picture or document uploads reject GIF outright. PNG is also the format to keep editing in.

Will the file get bigger?

Usually it stays similar for simple graphics. A single PNG frame can even be much smaller than a long animated GIF, since all the other frames are dropped.

Can I get a JPG instead?

Yes, use GIF to JPG. It fills transparent areas with white and makes a smaller file for photo-like GIFs.
