Why ConvertKoala?
-
Gets past GIF-only fields
Older forums, some email signature editors, school portals and intranet CMSs still list .gif as the only option.
-
Flat graphics look identical
Logos, icons, buttons and pixel art rarely use more than 256 colours, so they convert without visible change.
-
Clear about the limits
We tell you where GIF struggles, photos and soft shadows, so you can choose another format when it matters.
-
Converted in your tab
The PNG is processed by your browser. No file is uploaded, kept or looked at.
Frequently asked questions
Will the GIF be animated?
No. This page makes a single still GIF from each PNG. GIF is used here for compatibility, not motion.
Why does my photo look grainy or striped as a GIF?
GIF can only use 256 colours per image, while a photo has millions. To fake the missing shades, colours are mixed in fine dot patterns (dithering), and smooth skies can show bands. That’s a limit of the format. For photos, PNG to JPG keeps them smooth.
Is transparency kept?
Yes, but GIF transparency is all or nothing: each pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid. Soft edges and drop shadows from the PNG become hard edges, which can look slightly jagged on dark backgrounds.
Will the GIF be smaller than the PNG?
For simple graphics with few colours, often similar or a little smaller. For detailed images it can come out larger, because the dither patterns are hard to compress.
What works best as a GIF?
Logos, line drawings, icons, badges, charts with flat colours and pixel art. Anything with gradients, skin tones or photographic detail will suffer.
Is GIF still worth using in email signatures?
It’s safe: every mail client, including very old Outlook versions, shows GIF. PNG is widely supported too, so only switch if your signature tool or company policy asks for GIF.
