Frequently asked questions

Which output format should I choose?

JPG for photos you want to share, email or print: it opens everywhere and stays small. PNG for screenshots, logos, graphics with sharp text or anything that needs a transparent background. WebP for images going onto a website, where smaller files make pages load faster.

What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is converted, so you get a still picture. JPG, PNG and WebP output from this tool is never animated.

Is transparency kept?

With PNG and WebP output, yes. JPG can’t store transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white.

Does converting reduce quality?

PNG output is lossless: it keeps exactly what was decoded. JPG and WebP are saved at about 92% quality, which is hard to tell apart from the original but does throw away a little detail. Converting a JPG to PNG won’t restore detail the JPG already lost.

Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos here?

HEIC needs a special decoder, so it has its own page: use HEIC to JPG. Everything else on this page is handled directly by your browser.

Why did my WebP come out as a PNG?

Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac can open WebP but can’t create it. When WebP saving isn’t available, the tool falls back to PNG instead of failing. Chrome, Edge and Firefox produce real WebP files.
