Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container, also called HEIF) is the format iPhones have used for photos since iOS 11. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, but many devices and websites still can’t open it.

Why can’t Windows open my HEIC photos?

Windows needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store (HEIF Image Extensions plus HEVC Video Extensions, which can cost a small fee) to show HEIC. Many websites, Android phones and older programs don’t support it at all. JPG works everywhere.

Why do I wait a few seconds on the first conversion?

Browsers can’t read HEIC on their own, so the first time you convert, the page downloads a HEIC decoder (about 3 MB). Your browser then caches it, so later conversions start right away. Your photos are still processed only on your device.

How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?

Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose "Most Compatible". New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so convert those here.

Can my iPhone convert automatically when I copy to a PC?

Yes: Settings › Photos › "Transfer to Mac or PC" › Automatic converts photos to JPG when you copy them over a cable. It doesn’t help with files that are already HEIC on your computer or in cloud storage.

What happens to Live Photos?

You get the still photo as a JPG. The short video part of a Live Photo is a separate file and isn’t included.
