Frequently asked questions
How do I get a photo under 100 KB (or 50 KB) for an application form?
Drop the photo here, pick the limit the form asks for (or type your own) and press "Compress". We save the highest quality JPG that fits under that size. Note that some institutions also require minimum pixel dimensions or reject blurry, over-compressed photos, so check the official guide too.
What is the difference between file size and dimensions?
File size is how much space the image takes, in KB or MB. Dimensions are its width and height in pixels. This tool lowers the file size and keeps the dimensions whenever it can; it only scales the image down if the target can’t be reached otherwise. To change the pixel size itself, use the Resize Image tool.
Will the quality drop?
A little, yes; a smaller file always holds less detail. We pick the highest quality that still fits your target, so at sensible sizes the difference is hard to see. Very small targets like 20 KB will look softer.
What happens to transparent PNGs?
The output is always JPG, and JPG has no transparency. Transparent areas become a white background. If you need to keep transparency, this tool is not the right fit.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser, tap "Choose files" and pick your photos. JPG, PNG and WebP work; iPhone’s HEIC format is not supported yet, so set the camera to "Most Compatible" to save new photos as JPG.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device. Your photos never reach our servers, and nothing is kept once you close the page.
