Why is my PNG file so large?

PNG is lossless: it records every pixel exactly. That’s perfect for flat graphics, but photos and photo-like screenshots have millions of slightly different pixels, so the file balloons. JPG is built for photos and discards detail your eye barely sees.

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need the background to stay see-through, keep the PNG or convert it with PNG to WebP instead.

Should I convert screenshots full of text?

It depends. JPG can leave faint smudges around sharp text and thin lines. For a photo-heavy screenshot, JPG is great. For a code snippet or a spreadsheet, PNG often looks crisper, and is sometimes even smaller.

What quality is the JPG saved at?

About 92%. That keeps photos looking like the original while cutting the size. If you need to hit a specific limit like 200 KB, run the result through Compress Image afterwards.
