Why does Chrome or Google Images save pictures as .webp?

Many websites, Google’s own services included, deliver images as WebP because it is lighter than JPG or PNG and pages load faster. When you right-click and choose "Save image as", you get the file in the format the site sent: WebP.

Why can’t my computer open the .webp file?

WebP is younger than JPG and PNG. Older Windows photo viewers, Paint, Photoshop releases before 2022 and some Office versions don’t understand it. PNG is supported by practically every program made in the last 25 years.

Will the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports transparency just like WebP, so any see-through area stays see-through. That is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG here.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP from websites is usually compressed with some loss; PNG stores every pixel without loss. Same picture, more bytes. If size matters more than transparency, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.

What about animated WebP?

PNG output is a still image, so only the first frame of an animated WebP is kept.

Does it work on a phone?
