JPG to ICO in 3 steps

  1. Pick the JPG: a logo, a pet photo, a face, anything you want as an icon.
  2. Press "Convert to ICO"; the picture is squared and scaled to seven sizes.
  3. Download the .ico and set it on a folder, shortcut or website.

Why ConvertKoala?

  • Works with the file you have

Logos often arrive as a JPG in an email or WhatsApp chat. No need to hunt down the designer’s original first.

  • Personal icons, kept personal

Turning a family or pet photo into a folder icon happens inside your browser. The photo is never uploaded.

  • No editor required

Paint, Photos and most phone galleries can’t save .ico. Here it’s one button, nothing to install.

  • Honest about backgrounds

We tell you up front what a JPG can and can’t do as an icon, so the result isn’t a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

Will my icon have a transparent background?

Not the picture itself. JPG has no transparency, so whatever background the photo or logo had (often white) stays in the icon and shows as a filled square in browser tabs and on the desktop. For a cut-out icon, start from a transparent PNG and use PNG to ICO.

My JPG is a rectangle. How is it made square?

Icons are square, so a landscape or portrait photo is scaled to fit and centred, with transparent strips filling the leftover space. If you’d rather fill the whole square, crop the photo to 1:1 first with Crop Image.

Which photos make good icons?

Close, simple subjects: a face, a pet, one object on a plain background. At 16 or 32 px a busy landscape turns into a smudge. Crop tight around the subject before converting.

How do I put the icon on a Windows folder?

Right-click the folder › Properties › Customize › Change Icon › Browse, then pick your .ico. For a desktop shortcut, use Properties › Change Icon instead. Store the .ico in a folder you won’t delete.

Can I use it as my website’s favicon?

Yes. Name it favicon.ico, upload it to your site’s main folder and it will show in browser tabs. Just remember the square background from the JPG will be visible against dark browser themes.

Will JPG blur or blockiness carry into the icon?

Shrinking to icon size hides most JPG artefacts. If the source is small or heavily compressed, though, the 128 and 256 px sizes may look soft. Start from the largest, cleanest copy you have.
