Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG is an exact copy of what the JPG looks like now, including any blockiness it already has. What it does is stop things getting worse: further edits and saves won’t add new JPG artifacts.

Will the background become transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency information, so the PNG has a solid background too. To get a see-through background you need to remove it in an editor first; saving as PNG then keeps that transparency.

Why is the PNG several times bigger?

JPG throws away detail to stay small; PNG stores every pixel exactly. Same picture, much more data. For sharing finished photos JPG is usually the better choice.

When is PNG the right choice?

When you’ll keep editing the image, when it contains text or sharp lines you want to keep crisp from now on, or when a site or app only accepts PNG.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. .jpg and .jpeg are two spellings of the same format, and both are accepted here.

Can I do this on my phone?
