ICO to PNG in 3 steps

  1. Select the .ico, for example a favicon.ico or an icon from a program folder.
  2. Press "Convert to PNG"; the largest size stored inside is picked out.
  3. Download the PNG; several icons arrive together in a ZIP.

Why ConvertKoala?

  • Biggest version, automatically

An .ico can hold a dozen sizes. We take the largest, so you aren’t stuck with a 16 px thumbnail.

  • Edges stay transparent

Rounded corners and soft shadows keep their see-through parts, ready to drop onto any background.

  • Opens where .ico won’t

Word, Google Slides, Canva and most photo editors refuse .ico but happily take PNG.

  • No icon editor to install

Skip downloading special software. The icon is unpacked inside this browser tab, on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What is inside an .ico file?

An .ico is a small container that bundles the same icon at several sizes, typically 16, 32, 48 and 256 px. Windows and browsers choose the size that fits. A PNG holds just one image, so we export the largest one.

How do I get a website’s favicon to convert?

Most sites keep it at their root address: open example.com/favicon.ico in your browser and save it. If that doesn’t exist, the page source usually lists the icon in a link rel="icon" line.

The PNG is only 32 × 32 px. Why so small?

That was the largest size inside the .ico, so there was nothing bigger to extract. Enlarging it will look blocky; for a sharp logo, look for the original artwork or an SVG version.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels in the icon stay that way in the PNG. If you need a white background instead, run the PNG through PNG to JPG.

Can I get the other sizes too?

This page exports only the largest image. You can make any smaller size from it with Resize Image.

Can I convert icons taken from .exe or .dll files?

Only once they are saved as separate .ico files. Programs store icons inside their own code; extract them first with an icon extractor, then convert the .ico here.
