HEIC to PNG in 3 steps
- Choose the .heic or .heif photos you want to edit or keep at full quality.
- Press "Convert to PNG"; outside Safari the decoder downloads once first.
- Save the PNGs; a set of photos comes as one ZIP.
Why ConvertKoala?
-
No second round of loss
JPG compresses again on top of HEIC. PNG stores every decoded pixel as is, a clean starting point for edits.
-
Friendly to design apps
Older Photoshop, GIMP, Figma and Canva import PNG without plug-ins, so you can start layering straight away.
-
Repeated saves stay clean
Edit, save, edit again: a PNG doesn’t pick up new blur or blocks each time you re-save it.
-
Photos never leave the phone
The HEIC is decoded in your own browser. Personal pictures aren’t uploaded anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose PNG or JPG for iPhone photos?
For sharing, emailing or posting, JPG is smaller and plenty. Pick PNG when you plan to edit, retouch, print large or re-save the photo many times, because PNG adds no further compression. For everyday use, HEIC to JPG is the lighter choice.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC is one of the most efficient photo formats around; PNG is lossless and was designed for graphics, not photos. A 2 MB HEIC can easily become a 10 to 20 MB PNG. Same picture, far more bytes.
Will the background become transparent?
No. A photo has no transparent areas, so the PNG shows the full scene just like the original. If you used iPhone’s "lift subject" feature, share the cut-out sticker directly from the phone instead, as it isn’t stored in the HEIC.
Why does the first conversion take a few seconds?
Only Safari reads HEIC natively. In Chrome, Edge or Firefox the page fetches a HEIC decoder, about 3 MB, the first time. It’s cached afterwards, and your photos are still handled only on your device.
Do I lose quality compared with the original?
The PNG holds exactly what the HEIC decodes to, with nothing taken away. It can’t add back detail the iPhone already compressed, but it won’t lose any more.
Are location and camera details kept?
No. The PNG contains the picture only, so GPS location, date and camera information from the HEIC are left behind.
