How to compress a PDF file in 3 steps

  1. Choose the PDF you want to make smaller.
  2. Keep "Recommended", or pick "Strong" and a target size (2 MB, 1 MB or 500 KB) if a form has a limit.
  3. Press "Compress PDF", check the before and after size, and download.

Why ConvertKoala?

  • Your document is not uploaded

Most PDF compressors send your file to their servers. Ours runs in your browser, so contracts, IDs and bank statements stay on your device.

  • Text stays sharp

Recommended mode only shrinks the photos and scans inside the PDF. Text and drawings are left untouched, so they stay crisp and selectable.

  • Hit an upload limit

Need a PDF under 2 MB, 1 MB or 500 KB for an application portal or an email? Strong mode aims straight for that target.

  • Never bigger, always free

If a file can’t get any smaller, you get the original back. No caps, no signup, no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compress a PDF file?

Drop your PDF on this page, keep the "Recommended" mode and press "Compress PDF". You’ll see the size before and after and how much you saved, then download the smaller file. Nothing to install and no account needed.

How can I get a PDF under 1 MB?

Choose "Strong" mode and set the target to 1 MB (or 500 KB, or 2 MB). Each page is turned into a compressed image and squeezed until the file fits. Try "Recommended" first if you want to keep selectable text; if it’s still too big, switch to "Strong".

Will compressing a PDF lower the quality?

In "Recommended" mode, text and vector drawings are not touched at all; only the photos and scans inside are made lighter, which is hard to notice on screen. "Strong" mode turns pages into images, so very small text can look a little softer at high zoom.

Why can’t I select the text after compressing?

That happens in "Strong" mode: every page becomes an image, which gives the smallest file but means text can no longer be selected, copied or searched. If you need that, use "Recommended" mode instead.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends on what’s inside. Scanned or photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 40–80 %. PDFs that are mostly text are already small, so they shrink only a little. If no saving is possible, you get your original file back, never a bigger one.

Is my file safe? Is it uploaded?

It is never uploaded. The whole compression runs inside your browser on your phone or computer, and nothing is kept once you close the page. Password-protected PDFs aren’t supported; remove the password first.
