What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It squeezes photos even smaller than WebP, so more websites and CDNs serve it, and Chrome saves the picture as .avif when you download it from such a site.

Why won’t Windows open my AVIF?

Windows Photos needs the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store to show AVIF, and many older programs, Office versions and photo printers don’t support it at all. JPG avoids all of that.

The tool says it can’t read my AVIF. What now?

This page uses your browser’s own AVIF decoder. Current Chrome, Edge and Firefox have one, and Safari does from version 16 (iOS 16 / macOS Ventura). On an older browser, update it or open the page in Chrome.

Will the colours look the same?

For normal photos, yes. Some AVIFs carry HDR or extra-wide colour, which JPG can’t store; those may look a touch flatter or less bright after conversion.

Is transparency kept?

Not in JPG. Transparent parts of an AVIF are filled with white. If you need them kept, pick PNG or WebP in the Image Converter instead.

Can I convert AVIF on my phone?

Yes, on any recent phone browser. Open the page, choose the files from Downloads and save the JPGs to your gallery.
